Why are bike lanes being added to Scottsdale Drive?

This project is directed by the 2022 Transportation Master Plan and the 2013 Cycling Master Plan. These Council-approved policies identify Scottsdale Drive as a cycling route. This is because it provides an important North-South link through South Guelph neighbourhoods that will connect to existing and future cycling routes (see map in the information sheet).

The new bike lanes will enable more people to bike or scoot between homes, parks and shops. It will help students to cycle to and from the four elementary schools, the two high schools in the area, the mall and the university campus.

Providing space for people to bike and scoot safely is part of ensuring that anyone of any age and ability can get around our city.

How will this impact on-street parking, sidewalks, transit and waste pick-up services?

On-street parking will be removed on Scottsdale Drive between College Avenue and Kortright Road. On-street parking will continue to be available as an alternative on the following side streets:

    • Wilsonview Avenue
    • Janefield Avenue
    • Ironwood Road
    • Steffler Drive
    • Hosking Place.

The kiss and ride for école élémentaire St. René Goupil and the school bus loading zone for Priory Park Public School will not be impacted. We will install a multi-use path in the boulevard to allow people using the bike lanes to bypass the kiss and ride and the school bus loading zone when it is in use.

There will be no impacts to Guelph Transit service, nor to the existing sidewalks or private driveways.

Waste bins will need to be placed on the boulevard or at the end of driveways for collection, and not in the roadway or in the bike lane.

    When will these changes happen?

Installation of the bike lanes is planned to start in the summer of 2024 and be completed by the end of the year at the latest. A construction notice with the precise timing of implementation will be shared with residents at least two weeks in advance of the start date.

What about the traffic calming measures on Scottsdale Drive?

The City has been implementing traffic calming measures on Scottsdale Drive (between College Avenue West and Janefield Avenue) since 2022. The traffic calming bollards will be adjusted to accommodate the new bike lanes; some will be removed or re-positioned. The speed cushions will be unaffected.

We will continue to monitor vehicle speeds on Scottsdale Drive after the installation of the new bike lanes.
