Rainbow Crosswalk
Consultation has concluded
On May 25, 2023, we celebrated the installation of the City's first public rainbow crosswalk, to support diversity, inclusion and 2SLGBTQIA+ people in our community. On June 17, 2023 a public celebration was held at the crosswalk to mark Pride Month and to recognize Mattea Summerville's advocacy and those lost in the community.
An installation close to the crosswalk with background information and messaging of support and hope will be installed in the near future.
The City of Guelph will install a long-awaited rainbow crosswalk at the intersection of Gordon and Wilson streets this May, as a demonstration of support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Find out more about how the crosswalk came to be in the more information section below.
A rainbow crosswalk is one way to advance our community in making Guelph a safe, seen, and celebrated space for 2SLGBTQIA+ folks, but it doesn't work in isolation. Let's build on the momentum the crosswalk creates together.

Foreground 2SLGBTQ+ community leaders
I would like to see the launch foreground past and present leaders in the local 2SLGBTQ+ community. We have supported each other, created safe spaces for each other, and celebrated and grieved together here in Guelph for decades. We did that work without support from the city or our council. I’m delighted that the city and council are joining us now, but this crosswalk is — as this announcement says — long overdue, and it comes after more sacrifice than most of our neighbours will ever know. I’d like to see the city acknowledge that history and use this launch to recommit to partnership with the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Early response to the announcement about this crosswalk has received some very hateful responses. We need the city and council to demonstrate their solidarity with our community, not take credit for this very belated installation.

Forefront Representation
Hi! Beautiful project, let's spread that rainbow love of our flag everywhere! I only wish that I, as a Big Gay Jewish Man, could see some representation for all of my fellow Jewish fighters for human rights - we've been fighting for this cause for decades and many of the prominent 2SLGBTQAIIP+ representatives are from my tribe! Is it possible to add a blue Star of David to the flags, just a small one, as a nod to all my fellow brave Jewish fighters who constantly stand up in the face of adversity to push for acceptance of everyone? The dark blue stripe is already the perfect color - no extra supplies needed! I'm sure you'll recognize many of the names on this (short and incomplete) list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LGBT_Jews - a token symbol of appreciation for our constant struggle is all I ask for! Love the project, love the call for community input, and (most of all) love my fellow Canadians!

Big statues of all the Canadian prime ministers. Include the great explorers and generals Brock and Wolfe too. The people who made Canada great!

Pride up the Norfolk Underpass
The city should go beyond the crosswalk and look for more opportunity to show pride between Waterloo/Wilson and Macdonell. Flags could be hung from the light posts, additional painting could be done along the median and on the west retaining wall (with input and some direct creation by the community). Take that dull grey space and provide the community an opportunity to liven it up, and tell a story.
