Focus more on safe and enjoyable Active Transportation
The proposed 'mode share' targets are disappointing and should be more focused on increasing walk, cycle and transit trips. If the City truly wants to increase Active Transportation the proposed 'Pedestrian Priority Network' and 'Spine Cycling' network are inadequate. The proposed cycle network still focuses on putting bikes next to cars, on busy streets, and in narrow bike lanes (these are not safe and enjoyable). A quality cycle network should be throughout the city, safety-focused, and highly interconnected. True separation of cyclists and cars should be the goal where possible.
A few other thoughts:
- The proposed alternatives don't seem to address the need to be able to safely cross the Hanlon on a bike or foot. Pedestrian and bike overpasses are needed over the Hanlon if we actually want to facilitate active transportation across this major barrier.
- Many of the semi-major roads (Edinburgh, Silvercreek etc.) don't have adequate pedestrian crossing infrastructure. More pedestrian crossing signals and curb extensions would greatly increase walkability.
Thanks for the chance to comment and provide feedback. The storyboard format was a good way of presenting the information.
